Poorly managed waste can release harmful greenhouse gases and pollute the environment.<\/p>\r\n<p>Ireland generated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.ie\/our-services\/monitoring--assessment\/waste\/national-waste-statistics\/municipal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3.2m tonnes of municipal waste in 2020<\/a>, 43% of which came from commercial and public service sources. In addition, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.ie\/publications\/circular-economy\/resources\/nature-and-extent-update-15th-June.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">food waste in the Irish commercial sector is estimated to be 348,000 tonnes annually<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n<p>One way to tackle commercial waste is through recycling which brings many benefits. Landfill sites emit methane and other toxic gases contributing to climate change.<\/p>\r\n<h3>Compliance with waste regulations<\/h3>\r\n<p>By recycling waste, businesses can ensure they comply with various <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.ie\/our-services\/licensing\/waste\/waste-licensing\/waste-legislation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">waste regulations<\/a> and avoid penalties for non-compliance.<\/p>\r\n<p>Examples of regulations businesses must comply with include:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>\r\n<p>Company cars or light commercial vehicles of less than 3.5 tonnes must be scrapped according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizensinformation.ie\/en\/travel_and_recreation\/motoring_1\/buying_or_selling_a_vehicle\/how_to_dispose_of_an_end_of_life_vehicle.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">end-of-life vehicle (ELV) regulations<\/a> which require the use of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elves.ie\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">licensed, authorised treatment facilities<\/a>. An end-of-life vehicle disposed of illegally is a criminal offence which could lead to a fine of up to \u20ac500,000 or three years imprisonment (or both).<\/p>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li>\r\n<p>Businesses must deal with packaging in an environmentally friendly way according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sdcc.ie\/en\/services\/environment\/recycling-and-waste\/waste-regulations\/packaging\/packaging.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">European Union (Packaging) Regulations 2014<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li>\r\n<p>Electrical and electronic equipment should be disposed of responsibly under Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) rules. Producers of WEEE must finance its collection, treatment, recovery and environmentally sound disposal.<\/p>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3>Reduce waste costs<\/h3>\r\n<p>There are many costs associated with managing waste. Recycling waste, rather than sending it directly to landfill, can help to cut those costs.<\/p>\r\n<p>Since introducing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishstatutebook.ie\/eli\/2013\/si\/194\/made\/en\/print\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Waste Management (Landfill Levy) Regulations 2013<\/a>, commercial waste disposed of at landfill sites has been subject to a levy of \u20ac75 per tonne. Businesses also need to pay a gate fee charged by the owner of the landfill site.<\/p>\r\n<h3>Business reputation and growth<\/h3>\r\n<p>Customers and investors increasingly expect companies to be environmentally friendly.
