{"id":6181,"date":"2025-11-12T15:02:12","date_gmt":"2025-11-12T15:02:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/amtivo.com\/uk\/standards\/\/\/hilton-shows-how-going-green-saved-millions\/"},"modified":"2025-12-15T16:16:23","modified_gmt":"2025-12-15T16:16:23","slug":"hilton-shows-how-going-green-saved-millions","status":"publish","type":"standard-post-filter","link":"https:\/\/amtivo.com\/uk\/standards\/iso-14001\/insights\/hilton-shows-how-going-green-saved-millions\/","title":{"rendered":"How Hilton Used ISO 14001 to Save $550M+"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Since 2009, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hilton.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hilton<\/a> hotel chain\u2019s environmental management systems (certified to ISO 14001) have helped the international hotel group improve performance, conserve resources, and minimise impact across its portfolio. <\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p>Today, Hilton tracks progress through LightStay \u2013 its own global system for tracking energy, water, waste, and community impact across its hotels \u2013 against 2030 goals set from a 2008 baseline, reporting reductions in energy, water, waste, and carbon intensity.\u00a0The organisation\u2019s initiatives have enabled teams to share best practices, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.costar.com\/article\/632818033\/hilton-esg-expert-shares-the-three-must-haves-of-hotel-sustainability-efforts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">contributing to utility cost savings of over $1 billion<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n<p>Hilton&#8217;s corporate responsibility strategy, <a href=\"https:\/\/travelwithpurpose.hilton.com\/our-reporting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Travel with Purpose<\/a>, has driven positive social impact around the world while supporting long\u2011term business success. In 2024, Hilton operated more than 8400 properties across approximately 140 countries and territories, serving over 224million guests and employing 492K team members.<\/p>\r\n<p>Since 2008, the company has reported the following environmental achievements:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><strong>48.1% reduction<\/strong> in Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions intensity (managed hotels) against the 2008 baseline, on the way to a 75% reduction by 2030.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>32.7% reduction<\/strong> in Scope 3 carbon emissions intensity (franchised hotels) against the 2008 baseline, targeting 56% by 2030.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>36.3% reduction<\/strong> in water use intensity (managed operations), toward a 50% reduction by 2030.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>60.6% reduction<\/strong> in landfilled waste intensity (managed operations), achieving the 2030 goal of 50% reduction in 2023.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>Hilton has partnered with respected international organisations, including <a href=\"https:\/\/support.wwf.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WWF (World Wildlife Fund)<\/a>, to preserve natural resources and reduce environmental impact across hotels worldwide. This includes long\u2011standing food waste reduction work through the <a href=\"https:\/\/hotelkitchen.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hotel Kitchen<\/a> food waste reduction platform, low\u2011waste event guidance, and wider initiatives such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winnowsolutions.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Winnow AI food waste management systems<\/a> in nearly 200 hotels across 40 countries, saving an estimated 3.9M meals annually.<\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/amtivo.com\/uk\/standards\/iso-14001\/insights\/strategies-waste-reduction-with-iso-14001\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Innovative waste strategies for businesses.<\/a><\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<h2>How ISO 14001, ISO 9001 and ISO 50001 Enable Hilton\u2019s Shared Value Strategy<\/h2>\r\n<p>The organisation revealed that it uses ISO standards to help manage their efforts. The organisation has achieved certification to <a href=\"https:\/\/amtivo.com\/uk\/standards\/iso-14001\/certification\/\" rel=\"noopener\">ISO 14001 for environmental management<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/amtivo.com\/uk\/standards\/iso-9001\/\" rel=\"noopener\">ISO 9001 for quality management<\/a> and ISO 50001 for energy management across its entire hotel portfolio \u2013 an incredible achievement which has set a precedent for the \u00a3billion industry. In 2024, Hilton also earned an <a href=\"https:\/\/ecovadis.com\/blog\/ecovadis-medals-and-badges-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EcoVadis Silver medal (top 15%)<\/a> and featured in the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (World and North America) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spglobal.com\/sustainable1\/en\/csa\/yearbook\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">S&amp;P Global\u2019s Sustainability Yearbook<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n<p>Hilton has shown that what gets measured, gets done. The first step in reducing environmental impact is for organisations to measure their current position. Involving all staff can provide an impression of what is needed and what can be changed or removed entirely to improve the business\u2019s carbon footprint. Areas to consider when assessing your current environmental position might include the use of lighting, turning off electrical equipment, recycling and so on.<\/p>\r\n<p>The little things add up.
