Job Purpose
The Environmental Compliance Officer will be responsible for delivering and conducting a nationwide field-based inspection schedule, supporting investigations and stakeholder engagement in relation to the deposit return scheme (DRS).
Success Criteria
This is an operational role with accountability for delivering accurate and timely outcomes.
Context
The Environmental Compliance Officer will be responsible for delivering a work programme and a nationwide inspection and compliance schedule for the DRS, including the following duties:
Field inspections and audits
- Conduct on-site inspections at member and non-premises to check compliance with DRS rules and regulations.
- Review physical products to check logo, labelling, and barcodes.
- Review documentation to verify proper invoicing of deposits.
Investigations
- Support investigations into suspected cases of non-compliance or fraud, interviewing relevant parties as appropriate and gathering necessary evidence.
- Work with wider internal teams to determine causes of non-compliance and recommend corrective actions.
Reporting and data management
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of inspections, investigations, and findings.
- Provide detailed reports to management outlining findings and suggesting further actions where necessary.
Enforcement action
- Issue notices of non-compliance.
- Work with wider internal teams to support escalation to external enforcement authorities / gaining compliance.
Stakeholder engagement
- Educate and provide guidance to retailers, return point operators, and the public about their responsibilities under the DRS.
- Promote awareness of the benefits of the DRS and encourage voluntary compliance.
- Other duties deemed necessary from time to time
Qualifications and Experience Required:
- A degree in Environmental Sciences (or similar) is an advantage, but not required
- Experience in inspections, environmental consultancy, or customer service field-based roles is an advantage
- Full clean driver’s licence (min category B)
- Fluent in written and oral English
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively, both independently and in a team environment
- Excellent listening skills
- Good knowledge of Microsoft Office
