Introduction
We were contracted by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), to provide assistance on the enforcement of the Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment (WEEE) and Battery Regulations, through the delivery of a retailer and distance seller inspection campaign.
Client Requirement
Under the European Union WEEE and Batteries Regulations, the EPA have a responsibility to ensure that retailers and distance sellers in Ireland operate in compliance with the regulations.
The purpose of the regulations is to ensure that national policies on the management of WEEE and Batteries are consistent throughout the European Union and include:
- European Union (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) Regulations 2014 (S.I. No. 149 of 2014)
- European Union (Batteries and Accumulators) Regulations 2014 (S.I. No. 283 of 2014)
- European Union (Batteries and Accumulators) (Amendment) Regulations 2014
These regulations are based on the principles that preventive action should be taken, environmental damage should be rectified at source and the polluter should pay.
