What Is the BRCGS Packaging Materials Standard?

The BRCGS Global Standard for Packaging Materials is recognised worldwide as a leading quality and safety benchmark for packaging and packaging materials manufacturers. The standard sets out the product safety, quality and operational criteria a packaging operation needs to have in place – helping demonstrate that a business’s packaging is quality assured, compliant and authentic.

First published in 2001, it was the first packaging standard recognised by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI), and it’s used in over 90 countries. Achieving certification means your site has been audited by an approved certification body – like Amtivo – and shown to meet the standard’s requirements, earning recognition that your company meets clearly defined risk-based requirements.

Who Needs BRCGS Packaging Materials in Ireland?

It’s more than just food packaging. The standard applies to packaging for every application across the supply chain, including:

  • Food-contact packaging
  • Packaging for cosmetics and hygiene-sensitive products
  • Household and consumer goods
  • Raw materials
  • Single-use disposable products

If your business makes, converts or prints packaging of almost any kind, BRCGS Packaging Materials Standard is relevant to you.

What Does The Standard Cover?

An audit to certify against BRCGS Packaging Materials assesses the areas that together determine whether packaging leaves your site safe, legal and to specification. The standard’s requirements include:

  • Hazard and risk analysis (HARA): The documented risk assessment at the standard’s core.
  • Senior management commitment: Leadership involvement in product safety and quality, and the culture that flows from it.
  • Product safety and quality management system: The procedures and records that make good practice repeatable.
  • Site standards: Premises, equipment, hygiene and security appropriate to the products you make.
  • Product and process control: Ensuring what’s produced matches specification, from artwork and print control to finished product checks.
  • Personnel: Training and competency, so procedures work in practice, not just on paper.
  • Supplier and raw material management: Control over what comes into your process.
  • Traceability and incident management: Tracing materials both ways through your operation, and readiness to manage a withdrawal or recall.

What Certification Offers Your Business

Certification to BRCGS Packaging Materials offers customers and consumers reassurance that the products they buy are safe, and manufacturers confirmation that they are operating in a way that makes sure the packaging they use is functional, safe and will not harm or alter their products.

The standard focuses on ensuring the safety, quality, and operational standards of food, packaging and other consumer products, meaning certification can help:

  • Improve product safety and quality: The requirements set help lower risks and enhance product quality and safety.
  • Support with compliance: Certification can assist businesses in meeting legal requirements and following industry best practices.
  • Build greater consumer trust: The recognition of BRCGS gives consumers confidence that products meet high safety and quality standards.
