The BRCGS Food Safety Standard is a globally accepted food safety standard and sets out the safety, quality and operational criteria a food manufacturing business needs in place to meet its obligations and protect consumers.
The standard was the first to be benchmarked by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI), and certification is frequently a condition of supply for major retailers in Ireland, the UK and internationally.
Certification to BRCGS Food Safety independently verifies that your Food Safety Management System (FSMS) meets the requirements of the internationally recognised benchmark for best practice in food safety, quality and responsibility.
BRCGS Food Safety covers seven sections:
These core requirements apply to every site, and there are two further sections covering production risk zones and traded products which apply to relevant operations.
BRC and BRCGS are the same thing. BRC Global Standards rebranded to BRCGS in 2019, and the standards formerly known as BRC Food Safety, BRC Packaging and BRC Storage & Distribution now carry the BRCGS name.
If a customer has asked for BRC certification, BRCGS certification is what they mean – and it’s what we deliver.
BRCGS offers a suite of widely recognised product safety standards, trusted by retailers, manufacturers and food service businesses worldwide.
For businesses operating in the food and packaging industry, BRCGS certification demonstrates to customers, retailers and regulators that product safety, quality and legality are not only managed but embedded in how you operate and independently verified.
Any company that manufactures, processes or packs food can get certified – and, for many, it’s become a condition of doing business. You’ll typically need BRCGS Food Safety certification if:

The current version is Issue 9, although BRCGS has begun developing Issue 10. Until it’s published (with an effective date when it will apply from), Issue 9 remains the version your business is audited against.
Yes – all BRCGS standards are recognised globally, including by Irish and international retailers. BRCGS Food Safety is GFSI-recognised, meaning certification is accepted by major retailers and food businesses worldwide.
There is no current law which requires it, but many retailers and manufacturers won’t trade with uncertified suppliers, so commercially it often functions as a requirement.
Certified sites are listed in the official BRCGS Directory, where you can verify any company’s certification status.
