IATF 16949 Certificate Transfers

Transfer Your Certification

If your organization is already certified to IATF 16949 and is considering changing certification bodies, this page explains what a certificate transfer is and how the process works with Amtivo. Read on to understand more about eligibility, timing, and what to expect.

What Is an IATF 16949 Certificate Transfer?

An IATF 16949 certificate transfer is the formal process of moving your current, valid IATF 16949 certification from one IATF‑recognized certification body to another.

It’s typically used when a business changes certification partners while maintaining continuity of certification for customers and the automotive supply chain. Importantly, a transfer is not a simple paperwork exercise or an administrative shortcut.

Transfers are governed by IATF rules to ensure the process remains structured, impartial, and consistent. As part of that oversight, the receiving certification body must complete a full recertification audit to confirm your quality management system continues to meet IATF 16949 requirements before the certificate can be issued under the new body.

Why Organizations Choose to Transfer Certification Bodies

Organizations may choose to review their IATF 16949 certification body and transfer for a range of reasons.

These can include:

  • Audit experience and competence: Looking for auditors with strong automotive sector knowledge, a clear understanding of IATF 16949 requirements, and a consistent approach to audits across sites.
  • Communication and planning support: Looking for clear scheduling, timely communication, and practical information about what to expect before, during, and after audits.
  • Global coverage or multi‑site capability: Needing a certification body that can support multiple locations, regions, or complex supply chains under a coordinated audit program.
  • Strategic alignment: Aligning with a certification body whose approach, values, and service model support the organization’s long‑term quality and compliance objectives.

When Can You Transfer Your IATF Certificate?

A company can transfer at any point in its audit cycle, but the transfer audit is equivalent to a full system recertification audit and begins a new three-year certificate cycle. Because of this, most transfers take place when a company is due for recertification.

We typically collect the required information to determine the timing and your eligibility to transfer.

This timing aligns with contract renewal cycles, avoids disrupting surveillance planning, and provides certainty around audit dates, resources, and costs.

Transfers can also occur at other points in the cycle, as long as the transfer audit is scheduled as the next regular audit, such as a surveillance or recertification audit.

Audit duration:

  • The transfer audit will take the same amount of time as your next scheduled recertification audit. It must also take place within the normal timing window for that audit.
  • The audit length is not reduced for a transfer, and the required number of audit days is calculated using the normal IATF rules.
Understanding IATF 16949

The IATF 16949 Transfer Process

Transferring to Amtivo is designed to be clear and straightforward. Our helpful, experienced team will support you through each stage, from initial information review through to transfer audit planning.

1. Initial inquiry and eligibility check

After contacting Amtivo to discuss a potential transfer, you will share basic details, such as:

  • Your current IATF 16949 certificate
  • The sites and scope covered
  • Upcoming audit dates

We will then review your status in the IATF database and your certification history to confirm whether a transfer is permitted under IATF Rules, and to identify when it could take place within your existing cycle.

2. Application and quotation

If a transfer is possible, you complete an application so we can better understand your operations, sites, and processes.

Based on this information and the IATF requirements for audit time, we will prepare a quotation that reflects the required recertification‑duration transfer audit.

3. Documentation review

Before the transfer audit, we will carry out a review of key documentation, typically including:

  • All required IATF pre-audit planning items.
  • Previous IATF 16949 audit reports.
  • Records of nonconformities and associated corrective actions.
  • Any significant changes since the last audit.

This review supports planning for the transfer audit and helps focus attention on current performance and any outstanding issues.

4. Transfer audit

The transfer audit is conducted as an equivalent to a recertification audit.

During the audit, Amtivo auditors will:

  • Assess your automotive Quality Management System (QMS) against the full IATF 16949 requirements.
  • Verify the effectiveness of your processes, as well as their implementation and maintenance.
  • Consider your past performance and the status of any previous nonconformities.

Any new nonconformities identified during the transfer audit must be addressed within the agreed timeframes.

5. Certification decision and certificate issuance

After the transfer audit:

  • Your audit results and any corrective actions are reviewed
  • A certification decision is made in line with IATF requirements
  • If the decision is positive, Amtivo will issue an IATF 16949 certificate for the agreed scope and validity period. Congratulations!

Eligibility to Transfer

In most cases, transferring an IATF 16949 certificate is a straightforward process. Eligibility and timing depend on the IATF scheme rules and your certification history.

In general, you will need:

  • A currently valid IATF 16949 certificate
  • An acceptable certification history, for example, audits completed in line with your audit program, and no overdue or unresolved major nonconformities
  • No IATF sanctions that would prevent transfer

As part of an initial inquiry, your certification body will review your current status and information in the IATF database to confirm whether a transfer is possible within your existing certification cycle.
