The ISO 14001 implementation process generally consists of five stages:

1. Environmental Policy: Creation of an EMS begins with documenting environmental objectives and a commitment to continual improvement. The environmental policy provides overall direction for the implementation process and is typically communicated to relevant stakeholders.
   
2. Planning: This stage involves identifying business activities that have actual or potential environmental impacts. It also includes confirming available resources for developing the EMS, establishing objectives for managing identified risks, defining roles and responsibilities, considering applicable legal requirements, and reviewing essential operations that may be affected by EMS implementation.
   
3. Implementation: Controls for managing environmental aspects are put into place during this stage. Depending on the risks being addressed, this can involve introducing new procedures, technologies, staff awareness training, or emergency response measures.
   
4. Internal Audit and Corrective Action: After implementation, the EMS is evaluated to determine whether it operates as intended. Audits may identify discrepancies or non-conformities, and corrective actions are used to address any issues. Additional measures may be required to fully resolve certain environmental risks, followed by retesting to confirm that problems have been corrected.
   
5. Monitoring and Management Review: Management reviews support the ongoing improvement of the EMS and assess its overall applicability and effectiveness. Senior management typically reviews system performance and ensures alignment with organisational objectives, making adjustments to policies or controls where needed.

Once things are in place, evaluation needs to begin. Monitor and measure performance through internal audits, and show results in management reviews to demonstrate involvement.

Understand the key requirements for achieving ISO 14001 certification. 

The cost of ISO 14001 certification varies based on several factors. The main factor is how long it takes an auditor to complete their assessment, which depends on:

• Staff numbers
• Number of sites
• Industry
• Complexity and risk

A small company might need only a few days, while a larger, multi-site organization will need more time and incur higher costs. Complex industries require qualified auditors, which can increase the budget.

Where permitted by the relevant accreditation body, site sampling may be used to reduce audit time.

Be aware of hidden and ongoing costs from some certification bodies, like management and travel fees. Understand the contract length—typically three years to match the recertification cycle. Watch for lower quotes tied to longer contracts.

Certification is carried out in two key stages:  

Stage 1 Audit: Documentation & readiness review  

•  A high-level audit reviews your documentation, site conditions, and overall readiness for full certification—including evaluation of your management system’s implementation, understanding of standard requirements, and adequacy of internal audits and management reviews. Any issues identified during this stage can be addressed before moving to the Stage 1 Audit.
• We recommend a gap of at least 8 weeks between Stage 1 and Stage 2, with a maximum of 6 months.  

Stage 2 Audit: Main audit

• This on-site audit evaluates the implementation and effectiveness of your management system to confirm full conformity with all standard requirements. To proceed, any major nonconformities identified during the Stage 1 Audit must be resolved.

What happens if issues are found?  

• Minor non-conformity: A corrective action plan with timelines must be submitted, approved, and the nonconformities corrected before a certification decision can be made.
• Major non-conformity: Must be resolved within 30 days of the completion of the Stage 2 Audit.
